North American Industries Does the Heavy Lifting for Cosmos Granite & Marble

March 2010

Woburn, Massachusetts - North American Industries (NAI) was chosen by Cosmos Granite & Marble (Cosmos) to design and install four bridge cranes and runways. Cosmos, headquartered in Raleigh, NC, is a major importer and wholesale supplier of premium quality natural stone for commercial and residential building projects. The company imports and distributes marble and granite slabs and tiles through five distribution facilities across the U.S.

A key criterion for Cosmos in choosing NAI to supply the overhead crane systems was short lead time. As part of a rapid move to a new warehouse facility, Cosmos required that its cranes and 750 feet of runway be designed, manufactured and installed in six weeks. NAI’s Lean operating environment allowed it to deliver and install over 175,000 pounds of steel columns, runway beams and cranes within Cosmos’ tight lead time requirements.

NAI installed four top-running bridge cranes in Cosmos’ new warehouse. Each of the 48 foot span, five ton single-girder cranes were placed in the warehouse to allow easy access to all of the slabs and tiles. Each crane is set on its own 188 foot runway with an independent traveling pendant, allowing the operator stand separated from the load and move anywhere along the bridge, thereby improving operator safety. NAI also specified an electrified transfer cart for Cosmos, enabling it to transfer loads among cranes quickly and efficiently.

Vamsi Nallapati, President of Cosmos Granite & Marble stated, “North American Industries has been a pleasure to work with. The staff on hand has been great and is very knowledgeable about cranes and the crane industry. We had a very tight deadline to keep, and NAI was able to meet this time constraint.”

“This was a great project. Cosmos knew the project timeline was tight and cooperated completely with NAI by collaborating on design, allowing site access whenever we needed it and answering questions immediately. Both companies worked well together to achieve the desired results,” said Jay Levenson, President of North American Industries.

NAI is a leading manufacturer of industrial overhead crane systems, including bridge cranes, gantry cranes, monorails, jib cranes, and custom-engineered systems. With its large, experienced engineering group, technical sales force and over 40 years of manufacturing expertise, the Company is well-positioned to handle the needs of a diverse range of end users. NAI designs, manufactures and installs crane components and crane systems for the military and municipalities as well as large and small operating businesses on a global basis. The Company is a member of the CMAA (Crane Manufacturers Association of America), and its crane systems are frequently featured in Hoist and Overhead Crane & Hoist magazines.
